Making a piñata for a birthday party

Organizing a birthday party often involves activities and surprises to delight the little ones. And what better way to add a touch of fun than by making a personalized piñata?

Materials needed to make the piñata

Before going into the details of how to make it, let’s first look at the materials you’ll need.

Here it is:

• a balloon, for the basic structure. Its color is of no importance.
• newspaper, which you’ll have to tear into strips.
• papier-mâché glue. For this, mix 2 parts white glue with 1 part water, or prepare a paste with 1 part flour and 2 parts water, heated slightly.
• light cardboard, for details (e.g. tail, legs, head, etc.).
• acrylic paint and brushes.
• crepe or tissue paper, for decoration.
• scissors and tape.
• solid wire or string, to hang the piñata.
• sweets and small toys, such as figurines in keeping with your birthday theme, for filling.

Clothing

Create the basic structure by inflating a balloon for the body. Use pieces of cardboard to create complementary elements such as legs, tail and neck. Tape them to the balloon.

Apply papier-mâché by dipping strips of newspaper in papier-mâché glue, then laying them on the structure. Cover the balloon and cardboard parts evenly.

Add several coats for strength (approx. 3 to 5 coats). Allow to dry completely after each coat, about 24 hours.

Once the base is dry, cut out the details (such as ridges, claws or teeth, depending on your theme) from cardboard or thick paper. Secure with tape or papier-mâché.

Cover the additions with papier-mâché to integrate them into the main structure.

Paint the piñata according to the colors of what it represents. Leave to dry for a few hours.

Finishing the piñata

Once the piñata is completely dry, pierce the balloon inside to remove it. Cut out a small trap door to insert candies and toys.

Add crepe paper or tissue paper for a festive effect. Glue in layers or bangs for a textured look.

Insert candy and toys into the opening. Close with tape or another layer of papier-mâché.

Finally, to hang it, cut two small holes in the top of the piñata. Thread a strong thread or string through them and tie a knot to create a hanging loop.
