Medieval decoration
Here are a few simple ideas for creating an atmosphere worthy of medieval times.
Invitation cards for a knight’s birthday party
Before you start organizing your knights’ birthday party, you’ll need to invite all your friends!
To mark the occasion at this stage, you can make invitations in line with the theme, or buy ready-made ones:
Ideas for decorating the room
To transform your room into a medieval universe, start by imagining a space where knights could gather.
Use simple materials like cardboard or fabric to recreate emblematic elements: towers, standards, shields and small castles. You can also use heraldic flags and pennants.
Hang accessories like medieval shields and swords on the walls. To keep your budget in check, you can easily make them yourself from cardboard and paint them.
Drape red, blue or gold drapes over the walls to represent a banquet hall.

Balloons will also add a touch of color and recall the festive side of a birthday party.
To enhance the atmosphere, add LED candles to simulate old-fashioned lighting. Include signs at the entrance, such as“Welcome to the Château de …“, with your child’s first name.
The table
For the table, imagine a medieval banquet worthy of a king and his knights! Choose a thick tablecloth, golden accessories and coat-of-arms motifs.
Find out more about :
- a beige or gold tablecloth, with a bright red table runner decorated with medieval symbols. Patterned tablecloths are also available for this kind of occasion.
- cardboard plates, gilded or printed with coat-of-arms motifs. The same goes for cups.
- a model castle or knight figurine for the center, or decorations reminiscent of the theme.
If you’re not doing a piñata or treasure hunt, you can also arrange little bags of treats in each place. Don’t hesitate to add natural elements like branches or leaves to recall medieval forests.
The canvas for the photoshoot
To liven up your knights’ birthday party, you can set up a themed photo backdrop. The children can pose in front of it for souvenir photos. This is commonly known as a “photoshoot”.
For this, a castle or medieval room is perfect.
You can make your own, or buy one ready to use. To fix it in place, use one of your walls, or use a stand with tripod and fasteners. Here are the alternatives and materials we recommend:
The piñata
It’s both an attractive decoration and a fun activity.

The idea here is to personalize it so that it looks like something related to the world of knights. Start with the shape of a dragon or a helmet.
For the first, use green and yellow leaves to make the body, cut out eyes, horns, wings, a little mane on the head, and possibly a flame coming out of its mouth!
For the second, go for white and add a visor made of black and white, or even gold paper.

Knight-themed birthday cakes
There’s no better way to treat little adventurers than with a personalized knight-themed birthday cake. Here are our ideas.
The one in the shape of a castle
It’s the perfect choice for this theme. Prepare a rectangular sponge cake base and cover it with grey sugar paste to imitate walls.
Add towers made of rolled cookies covered in chocolate or sugar paste. Details such as windows and doors can be drawn on with icing.
Finally, place knight and dragon figurines on the cake.
The base of this cake is sponge cake. See our complete recipe for the perfect way to make it!

The dragon
For a spectacular alternative, make a dragon-shaped cake. Use several small cakes to create a sinuous body.
Cover them with colored sugar paste to imitate scales, and add eyes, paws, tail and horns. Alternatively, you can simply draw a picture.

Here are a few ideas for simple games you can organize for your knight’s birthday.
You can organize them in teams, or individually, and you can offer a small reward to whoever wins the game(s).
The quest for treasure
Organize a medieval treasure hunt in which children go in search of a treasure hidden in the “kingdom”.
To do this, prepare a hand-drawn treasure map with key areas identified. It represents the rooms in your apartment or house.
Here’s a suggested list of clues. Write them by hand, and age the paper with tea to give them a parchment look:
- 1:“The king has lost his crown, searches his throne for a deep secret.” (place the following clue under or behind a crown hidden under a beautiful chair, or armchair).
- 2:“The knight’s weapon always points the way, find this sword to help you tomorrow” (hide a toy or foam sword in a corner and attach the next clue).
- 3:“Beneath the dragon’s flames lies the next wagon” (place a stuffed toy or dragon image in a “cave” corner, such as a dark corner or under a table).
- 4:“The stones are shiny, but the clue is discreet; look carefully among these precious objects.” (hide a bowl or bucket full of coloured stones or beads in the garden or room).
- 5:“To open the chest and reveal its treasure, find the key hidden in the treasure.” (drop a key attached to the next clue. If your safe locks with a code, enter the code).
- 6:“The treasure lies where the knights feast, find it quickly, it’s a great joy.” (place the chest containing sweets, toys or small gifts in the place indicated on the card).
If you don’t have everything you need to play the game, you can buy it online:
Shield-making workshop with coat of arms
Invite children to create their own shield. Provide cardboard shapes, paints, stickers, markers and aluminum foil for them to personalize.
To do this, give everyone a blank model of a printed coat of arms. Explain that it should represent their values or tastes: an animal for bravery, a sword for courage, a cross for religion, or stars for wisdom.
Here are some examples:

This workshop is both creative and interactive. Everyone can take away their own souvenir.
The knights’ tournament
Organize a tournament by distributing foam swords to each participant.
Define a combat zone (a circle or a mat) and explain the rules: no blows to the face, timed combat, and the objective is to hit the other knight 3 times.
You can combine this activity with the previous one! In this case, children will use the shield they’ve made themselves to protect themselves.
