Galactic decoration

Creating a theme-appropriate ambience is essential to get kids interested. Here are a few simple ideas for transforming your home into a galactic universe.

Astronaut birthday invitation cards

Before you start organizing your astronaut birthday party, you’ll need to invite all your friends!

To mark the occasion at this stage, you can make invitations in line with the theme, or buy ready-made ones:

Ideas for decorating the room

Transform your space into an intergalactic adventure with a few simple ideas.

Hang garlands of twinkling stars and papier-mâché or cardboard planets from the ceiling. Add a spotlight to create a cosmic atmosphere.

Use silver, dark blue and white balloons to represent space. Install a cardboard or inflatable rocket as the centerpiece.

Alternatively, place crumpled aluminum foil “moon rocks” around the room. A large banner depicting the Moon’s surface or a rocket as a backdrop will complete the decor.

The table

For a table worthy of the greatest space missions :

  • Choose a black or dark blue tablecloth with galaxy or star motifs. Complement with matching plates, cups and napkins.
  • Use a miniature rocket or astronaut figurines as the centerpiece. Add lighting elements like small LED lamps or electric candles for a stellar effect.
  • Sprinkle the table with star-shaped confetti and place “gems” or crystals to represent cosmic materials.

The piñata

To complete the space atmosphere, an astronaut-themed piñata will be a very popular activity with children.

Here are a few ideas and tips for designing and choosing it:

  • the rocket ready for take-off, with red and orange crepe paper flames at its base. Fill it with candy, plastic stars and small toys.
  • a planet with a large round ball decorated with cardboard rings.

Don’t hesitate to take inspiration from these creations:

You can also buy ready-made ones:

The canvas for the photoshoot

To reinforce the impression of being in the cosmos, you can install a themed photo background. The children can pose in front of it for souvenir photos. This is commonly known as a “photoshoot”.

Choose designs reminiscent of planets, with or without rings, comets and shooting stars.

You can make your own, or buy one ready to use. There are different ones for different ages. To fix it in place, use one of your walls, or a stand with tripod and fasteners. Here are the alternatives and materials we recommend:

It’s not just a decoration, but also an activity for later in the day. The kids will love posing together.

Astronaut-themed birthday cakes

For an astronaut’s birthday party, the cake is the centerpiece, transporting the children into the world of space. Here are a few gourmet ideas to fill little explorers with wonder.

The intergalactic rocket

To make it happen :

  • Prepare a rectangular sponge cake and cut it into the shape of a rocket. You can cut out two small triangles to form the wings.
  • Cover with coloured icing: red for the wings, silver or blue for the body.
  • add “flames” made of candy or colored edible paper.
  • Decorate with sugar stars or coloured pastilles to represent the portholes.

The base of this cake is sponge cake. See our complete recipe for the perfect way to make it!

You can take inspiration from these creations:

Edible sugar stars can be scattered around the cake to reinforce the space theme.

If you don’t feel like taking the plunge, you can also decorate your birthday cake with ready-to-use decorations. There are astronaut-themed decorations to choose from:

The starry dome

A dome-shaped cake, representing a planetary system, is an original and easy option.

  • Prepare a round or half-sphere cake, covered with black or midnight-blue icing.
  • add coloured sugar-paste spheres to represent the planets of the solar system.
  • draw stars and constellations with white icing.

Place a small rocket or astronaut figurine on the side for the finishing touch.

Planetary cupcakes

For a practical or complementary alternative, opt for cupcakes featuring stars, planets or other astronaut-themed elements. To do so:

  • make classic plain, chocolate or vanilla cupcakes.
  • use different-colored glazes to imitate the planets (blue for Earth, red for Mars, yellow for Saturn with a sugar ring).
  • Sprinkle glitter for a stellar effect, or place mini-decorations on each cupcake.

Astronaut-related games and activities

There’s no better way to take your kids on a galactic adventure. Here are a few ideas for simple astronaut birthday games.

You can organize them in teams, or individually. You can offer a small reward to whoever wins the game(s).

The treasure hunt

An intergalactic treasure hunt is an ideal activity to take children on a fun journey into space. Here’s a detailed 6-stage scenario for total immersion in the space universe.

Background: young astronauts are sent on a mission to recover fragments of a lost cosmic crystal, essential to the survival of their space station. At each stage, they must solve riddles to recover the pieces and succeed in their mission.

Here’s a suggested list of clues:

  • 1: A cryptic message appears on your dashboard: “To get started, find the star that always shines at the entrance.”
    • they discover a luminous star hidden near the front door. The following clue is written behind the star.
  • 2: “Careful, an asteroid belt is blocking the way! Solve this calculation to get through: How many planets in the solar system?”
    • the answer (8) leads the children to a place where 8 small objects (decorated stones or small balloons representing the planets) are arranged. The next clue is under one of the “stones”.
  • 3: “The red planet holds a secret. Turn around three times for the clue to appear”.
    • they find a“red planet” (a balloon or red decorative object) and have to walk around it three times before finding the clue attached below.
  • 4: “Your rocket is waiting for its crew. Find it to retrieve the crystal!”
    • they’re looking for a cardboard or toy rocket. The last clue is inside or attached.
  • 5: “Bravo, astronauts! The cosmic crystal is at hand. Search by the twinkling stars where your treasure lies.”
    • they find a treasure chest full of sweets, hidden next to a luminous or starry decoration.

You can put together the various elements that make up this hunt quite easily. If not, here’s a list of materials that will help you liven up the game:

Creating a custom rocket

Children make and decorate their own cardboard spacecraft. They can take it home as a souvenir.

First of all, prepare a finished example to guide the children.

Pre-cut shapes from lightweight cardboard, or print models on assembly card (in two or three parts: body, wings and nose). There are also ready-made kits, like this one:

Give everyone the different parts. Help them assemble the pieces with double-sided tape or glue. Leave to dry before decorating.

They can then paint it with brushes, or use felt-tip pens for more precise coloring. Provide glitter, stickers and rhinestones to add detail.

Once the rockets are decorated, add red, orange and yellow crepe paper flames at the bottom to simulate take-off.

Birthday gift ideas

You’re likely to receive requests from parents for your child’s gift! If you want to keep with the theme and help them, here are a few suggestions you can pass on to them:

Books and puzzles

A first option, and one that generally appeals to most, are books in the birthday theme. For the world of astronomy, there are some that are age-appropriate. They are illustrated and told in a way that makes them interesting and understandable.

Alternatively, you can turn to puzzles.
