From theme suggestions to the actual birthday party itself, we cover every topic. From invitation cards and interior decorations to cake, games and activities and gift ideas, we’ll advise you every step of the way.
Choosing a theme: the key to a child’s birthday party
You can of course organize a birthday party without a theme, but this is becoming increasingly rare. Children (and admittedly parents too) like to compete with each other to make this moment something special and out of the ordinary!
You may already have some ideas in mind, but you can also draw inspiration from our selection. Among them: the classics, but also those related to fictional characters or worlds (superheroes, video games, Disney, etc.).

Princess
Take the kids to a fairytale world of castles, gowns, glittering decorations and pastel colors.

Dinosaur
Transport your guests back to a time when these gigantic creatures ruled over wild landscapes.

Unicorn
Take the kids into the enchanted world of these legendary creatures with the right decorations.

Pirate
Transport your guests back to the days when privateers ruled the seas in search of new lands and treasure.
In each of our guides, you’ll find all our tips for planning your child’s birthday party around a given theme. Don’t hesitate to consult them for step-by-step guidance!
Party stages
Organizing a birthday party for a child involves several stages. Whether there’s a theme or not, you can’t avoid them! Here they are:
Invitation cards
Before you welcome your child’s friends home, you need to invite them! Word of mouth is one solution, but invitation cards are usually part of the package.
You can make them yourself, or buy them to match your theme. You’ll see from our guides that they do exist.

With everyone’s busy schedules, it’s a good idea to get your invitations out as early as possible. Two to three weeks is usually the right timeframe, as it gives families time to get organized.
For those who can’t make it, this will give you time to invite other friends instead. Some will take offense, but that’s often how it goes…
Don’t forget to indicate a desired response date with your telephone number. We advise you to put in a week before the date of the event. This will allow you to adapt if necessary.
Gift ideas
In response to your invitation, you may be asked: “What would please …? ?” .
Don’t put this question aside too easily, because answering it correctly will lead to satisfaction:
- for your child, since he or she will have validated with you what would please him or her.
- with the parent who’s asking whom you’ll be making the gift-buying process easier for. With our busy lives, it’s always nice to know where to turn, or better still, what to get!

In each of our dedicated guides, we specify a few gift ideas related to the theme. From books and puzzles to toys, board games and do-it-yourself kits, the options are endless.
Of course, you don’t have to follow the theme of the birthday party. But doing so is a great way to stay in the mood all afternoon long, especially when it’s time to open presents!
Decoration
When you welcome the kids into your home, you want them to be impressed and in the mood right away. That’s why decorating your home is an essential part of the process.

Depending on your means, your creativity and, it has to be said, your motivation, you’ll be able to perfect it. From classic bunting to plates and cups, balloons, tulle and figurines, there are plenty of ways to liven up your home.
So don’t hesitate to take inspiration from the ideas we’ve shared with you in our dedicated guides!
The birthday cake
Obviously, the cake is an extremely important stage in the organization of a child’s birthday party. There are several schools of thought:
- a classic cake
- a theme cake that you can make yourself, with a specific shape. It’s the most complicated part, of course, but if it’s well done, you’re guaranteed a wow effect! Another option is to order it from a patisserie you know, if your budget allows.
- use ready-made decorations, which are fairly easy to find on the Internet. It’s a good compromise!
- cupcakes, simpler to make and decorate, but still in keeping with the theme.

This step clearly depends on your pastry skills. But it also depends on how motivated you are and how much time you have.
Games and activities for children
Birthday parties mean activities to keep the kids busy, at least for part of the afternoon. Here again, the aim is to keep to your theme.
With our help, you’ll find ideas for games suitable for all ages. Whether it’s a reinvented treasure hunt, masquerade costume, the piñata, object making and much more, the possibilities are generally numerous.
You can also arrange for an activity to culminate in candy, chocolates or other souvenirs that your guests can take home with them.

Organizing a child’s birthday party is both an enjoyable and often challenging experience for parents. Between the expectations of your son or daughter, your friends and, let’s face it, yourself, you’re often trying to outdo yourself!
By combining good ideas, pragmatism and a measured budget, you’re sure to turn this moment into a happy memory for everyone.
